Indian Runner Duck

The Indian Runner duck is a popular breed for many duck keepers due to its unique appearance and egg laying capabilities.

The Indian Runner originates from Malaya and was first brought to the United Kingdom in the 1850’s by a ship’s captain via Whitehaven in Cumbria. These ducks were given to friends in Dumfriesshire and Cumberland who developed these original ducks into the breed we are familiar with today.

Indian Runner ducks have a distinctive upright stance due to their very short femora (thigh bone), therefore the legs and feet are placed further back under the body which gives the birds their distinctive ‘running’ appearance rather than waddling.

Indian Runner ducks are famed for their egg production, with some strains reported to lay up to 365 eggs per year, however a figure of 200 eggs per year is average for most ducks.
