Alpacas
Alpacas, together with llamas, guanacos and vicunas, are all members of the South American Camelid family. The UK alpaca population is currently around 15,000 and rising.
Alpacas are famed for the high quality fibre they produce, which commands a premium price on the world market. Alpaca wool is lanolin free and comes in 22 different natural colours, including black, grey, brown, beige and white. Each animal must be shorn annually, producing an average clip of between 2.5 and 5 kg of fibre per head per year.
A domesticated alpaca can live to 25 years of age. As well as profitable fibre producers they make fantastic non-aggressive, affectionate pets and eye-catching lawn mowers and trekking companions. However they are herd animals and should always be kept in groups of at least three with adequate grazing and shelter provided.
