Toggenburg Goat

The Toggenburg originates from the Swiss Alps, with the first of the breed arriving in Britain in 1884. Since the end of the 19th Century all purebreds have descended from the original Swiss goats with the addition of live animals imported in 1922, 1965 and importation of frozen semen for AI in the 1990’s. In 1905 the Toggenburg became the first breed to have its own registration section in the British Goat Society herd book.

As the Toggenburg originates from a mountain breed they are very hardy animals and adapt easily to their environment, they are also a good choice as a dairy goat or just as a pet. Due to their classification as a dairy breed, the most important characteristic for females is a high milk yield.

Females must carry the Swiss markings on the head, legs, tail and around the rear. In the male the markings are similar, but the facial markings become less distinct with age. The coat colours can vary through shades of fawn to chocolate brown, the male coat tends to be longer and courser than the females. Overall Toggenburgs should have a neat head with bright eyes and facial markings, a long slender neck and deep chest with straight limbs.

The British Toggenburg occurs when a Toggenburg is crossed with any other of the Swiss breeds. Apologies for any confusion caused. The British Toggenburg should be larger than the Swiss Toggenburg, with the males tending to be bigger than the females.
