Large Black Pig
With its ancestors dating back to the 16th century, the pedigree Large Black Pig originates from Devon, Cornwall and East Anglia. The Large Black Pig society was founded in the late 19th century and led to the breed spreading around the UK and being exported across the world.
The main characteristics of the breed are its distinctive all black colouring; lop ears and a long deep body. Large Black sows have excellent mothering ability and milk yields which allow them to successfully rear large litters.
The Large Black’s docile nature and hardiness make it most suitable to simple outdoor management systems and an ideal choice for smallholders. Traditional breeds such as the Large Black are undergoing a revival of popularity, notably due to the succulent taste and excellent eating quality of the meat.
