Feeding Ducklings
As soon as your ducklings have hatched make sure that they have access to water and food to avoid starvation and dehydration. If your ducklings have been hatched using an incubator it is a good idea to show them where their food and water is. Make sure that you use a specially designed drinker to avoid the risk of very young ducklings drowning or catching a chill by falling in it.
Using a specially prepared duck starter crumb will ensure that young ducklings are provided with all of the nutrients they need for growing. A protein content of 18-20% is desirable, however remember it is not the quantity of protein that is important but the quality of the protein used, ingredients such as soya will provide high quality protein for growing ducklings.
Don’t forget that ducks are very sensitive to coccidiostats which can be very harmful to them, so care should be taken that they do not have access to chick crumbs. However, in an emergency Smallholder Baby Chick Crumbs can be fed to ducklings as they are coccidiostat free and pose no risk to your duckling’s health.
By the time they are 4-6 weeks old your ducklings will be ready to be moved onto a growers feed, however remember to make the change gradually over 7 days to avoid any digestive upsets.
