Showing Goats
 If you’re the proud owner of a good looking goat then why not consider doing some showing this season. Goat ownership itself can be very rewarding but why not show the world (or at least the rest of the county!) what you have reared, bred or own.
To be eligible to show your goat you need to be the registered owner or keeper and be able to provide the appropriate documentation on the goat’s movement and to demonstrate that the goat is kept on a registered holding, the goat itself must be registered and ear tagged. The goat you are showing must be fit and well with good conformation.
Once you have selected your event and decided what type of class you will enter i.e. a breed class, a dairy class, an any other variety class or a young handlers class for those budding smallholders of tomorrow! Before you go think about the goat that you are going to present: can you control the goat and is he or she amenable? A stubborn goat that you cannot control is a recipe for disaster. In preparation for your show make sure your goat will walk on a lead and is used to being groomed and generally handled, so when the show day arrives these things are familiar to the goat and he or she should be more settled.
On the day of the show have a checklist so you do not forget anything and arrive with plenty of time to spare as this allows you to get organised and give your goat some time to settle, these outings can be an exciting experience even to the most placid goats. Allow some grazing time and another grooming, it may also be a good idea to watch other classes to get an idea of what is expected of you.
Whilst in the ring walk at the shoulder of your goat on the outside so as not to block the judges view. When pulled out of the line up stand in front of the goat, the judge will provide instructions, follow these and do your best to show off your goat.
