Vitamin D
The benefits of Vitamin D, and problems that can be caused through deficiencies.
Vitamin D, often referred to as the “sunshine” vitamin can be synthesised by birds themselves through their skin, however this is usually unreliable and can be insufficient. Feeding a well-balanced feed, which contains the essential levels of Vitamin D, will provide the correct levels for domestic poultry.
Vitamin D comes in varying forms and Vitamin D3 is required for the metabolism of the minerals Calcium and Phosphorus, which are vital to all healthy poultry. These minerals are essential for bone formation and the production of strong, healthy egg shells. Softening of bones is due to defective bone mineralisation.
Deficiency of Vitamin D can cause numerous issues including leg weaknesses and faltering gaits, pliable beaks and claws, ragged feather regrowth or decreases in egg production and hatchability
