Feeding Laying Hens
You may have heard of the phrase “you get out what you put in” well this is certainly true when it comes to your hens and the eggs that they produce. The quality of feed given to your hens will also be reflected in the quantity, quality and the taste of the eggs that they produce.
With this in mind, the Natural Free Range Layers Pellets and Natural Free Range Layers Crumble from the Smallholder Range provides a premium complete feed that is nutritionally balanced with all of the vitamins and minerals (including calcium and protein) which are needed to produce tasty eggs with strong shells on a regular basis. Both feeds are formulated with natural ingredients to help produce good quality eggs; with grass providing a deep rich taste and marigold petals contributing to a natural golden yolk colour.
Whilst the Natural Free Range Layers Pellets and Natural Free Range Layers Crumble come in two different consistencies, they both provide the same nutritional benefits and have been formulated with laying birds in mind. The Natural Free Range Layers Pellets are formulated into a small pellet size of 2.5mm in diameter making them suitable for a wide range of birds including bantams and ex-battery hens. Whereas, the Natural Free Range Layers Crumble is formulated into a crumble consistency which compared to a traditional meal/mash can create less dust and waste and can also help to prevent selective feeding.
Although a laying hen will only eat approximately 100-150g of feed per day, to ensure your hens can get the most from the Natural Free Range Layers Pellets or Crumble it would be advisable to provide the feed on an ad-lib basis (constant free access) allowing them to browse on the feed throughout the day. Also providing the feed in troughs or specialised feeders will help prevent excess wastage. Alongside providing your hens with the Natural Free Range Layers Pellets or Crumble on an ad-lib basis they should have continuous access to clean, fresh water and appropriate size grit to ensure they continue to receive a balanced diet.
The Smallholder Range layers feeds are not only supplied in the standard 20kg bags which can be ideal for the multiple bird owners but also are available in handy 5kg bags making them perfect for the small scale owner too.
